Kay Ryan will read at
Johnson Chapel, Amherst College. Ryan is the author of seven volumes of poetry, including
The Best of It: New & Selected Poems, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Her poems have been included in three Pushcart Prize anthologies, & have been selected four times for
The Best American Poetry. She has served as one of fourteen Chancellors of The Academy of American Poets since 2006 & was the 16th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Sponsored by the

Léonce Ndikumana in celebrating the publication of their new book,
Africa’s Odious Debts: How Foreign Loans & Capital Flight Bled a Continent. In the new book, Ndikumana & Boyce reveal the shocking fact that, contrary to the popular perception of Africa being a drain on the financial resources of the West, the continent is actually a net creditor to the rest of the world. The extent of capital flight from sub-Saharan Africa is remarkable: more than $700 billion in the past four decades. But Africa’s foreign assets remain private & hidden, while its foreign debts are public, owed by the people of Africa through their governments.

Amherst Cinema, & hold a Q&A afterwards. Frost is Harold & Elsa Siipola Israel Professor of Psychology at Smith College & has written extensively on compulsive hoarding, most notably in
Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding & the Meaning of Things.
Grey Gardens, directed in 1975 by Ellen Hovde, Albert Maysles, David Maysles & Muffie Meyer, looks into the odd & reclusive lives of relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Herbert Leibowitz will read from & talk about his new critical biography of William Carlos Williams,
“Something Urgent I Have to Say to You”: The Life & Works of William Carlos Williams. Leibowitz is the Editor & Publisher of
Parnassus: Poetry in Review; & is the author of
Fabricating Lives: Explorations in American Autobiography. He is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship & received the Poetry Foundation's Randall Jarrell Prize for Criticism in 2007. Leibowitz’s new study not only documents the exciting life of the man who rubbed shoulders with some of the twentieth century’s most important artists—including Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Wallace Stevens, & Allen Ginsberg—but provides a new perspective on the poetry that inspired a whole new movement in American verse. It is both a long-overdue portrait of an important writer & his work & an entertaining examination of the twentieth-century avant-garde art scene.
